Computer question by Russ C:
My Windows Defender won’t let me disable startup programs?
How do I change this? Is it some sort of registry or hidden system setting thing? Why does it do this?
I’m running Windows Vista btw

If you cant disable start up programs from Start/Run/ type MSCONFIG/Enter to open the System Configuration Utility/ then click on Start Up tab/ untick the progs you dont want to run on start up, it means you dont have administrative rights. Defender has nothing to with it, and is more trouble than it’s worth anyway. Use Ad-Aware and Spybot from download.com, free for decent spyware progs.

Hi,
You are no doubt reffering to the Start Up Programs feature in Defender. When you say it won’t “let you”, what do you mean? The boxes next to programs won’t “uncheck”?
I have a remote access service that can enable me to log onto your computer (with your permission, of course). I can look at your problem directly if you like. The service is normally $ 99, but I’ll donate a service call to you since you are here on answers. If you are interested, please go here and follow the instructions:

I look forward to serving you soon.

In the startup folder uncheck the following process:-
MSASCui.exe -hide
You can also stop the service:
Start->Run and type: services.msc
Scroll down until you find: Windows Defender
You can then change its status to: Disabled
